Yemi Getachew was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. An immigrant herself, she understands these complex proceedings from both sides: as an immigrant and advocate. She has built her practice on two key pillars: compassion and excellence. Abiding by these, she has helped thousands of individuals and families across Africa, the Middle East, Central and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia successfully overcome a wide range of immigration obstacles.

Yemi grew up in Ethiopia at a time when a brutal communist military government was in power. She personally experienced human rights indignations and witnessed persecution occurring all around her. What she realized during these trying times was that, although laws existed, there were no judiciary mechanisms in place to enforce them, with the end result of a society unwilling to abide by them. Yemi decided that she would be a fierce advocate to make sure due process rights are available to the vulnerable.

Before immigrating to the U.S. and starting her own immigration practice, Yemi graduated from the Addis Ababa University. She began practicing immigration law in San Jose, California 1996, representing immigrants across the planet in proceedings related to asylum, deportation defense, family-based immigration, waivers, citizenship, and naturalization.

Yemi is currently the Chair of the Santa Clara Valley American Immigration Lawyers Association (2017-2018) and has been part of the Executive Committee for the last three years in various positions. She also serves as a Consultant and Mentor in Removal Defense for Asian Law Alliance. Yemi is often described as an energizer, motivating her colleagues to excel in the practice of immigration law. She is a devoted champion of pro bono activities never missing an opportunity to ensure that those less fortunate have access to justice. Notably, she is a veteran of the Cara Pro Bono Project in Dilley Texas, has volunteered at AILA National volunteer clinics annually for over seven years, frequently speaks at Churches and Synagogues on Know Your Rights, has routinely led Pro Bono events for other immigration attorneys and personally represented hundreds of individuals in need. Yemi is also a Conference speaker and Continuing Legal Education provider. Beyond the field of immigration law, she is a sought-after motivational speaker for youths and young adults in various immigrant communities in the U.S. and volunteers hundreds of hours of her time as a mentor to immigrant students seeking to become successful professionals. Within the Ethiopian community, Yemi has been interviewed multiple times on the Voice of America Amharic program on current immigration issues.

In addition to her law degree, Yemi has a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and has been an Adjunct Professor in Legal and Ethical Issues at Western Seminary.
