Habesha Brewery Offers Additional Shares for Sale

Habesha Brewery is offering additional 300,000 shares to its existing shareholders after failing to get adequate bank credit.

Habesha has plant to install a brewing plant with annual capacity of 500,000 hectoliters in Debre Berhan Town, 120 KM outside of the capital, Addis Ababa.

The project is projected to cost 631 million Ethiopian birr. However Habesha has raised 40 per cent of the project after the acquisition of 43 per cent of its shares by the Dutch brewer, Bavaria NV.

The latest sale of shares is expected to raise Habesha's paid-up capital to 550 million birr.

Currently Ethiopia's largest brewer is BGI Ethiopia with brewing plants in Addis Ababa, Kombolcha and Hawassa with combine annual brewing capacity of 1.9 million hectoliter.

ERA Contracted Chinese Companies for Road Upgrade Project

Ethiopian Roads Authority last week signed agreement with two Chinese construction companies to upgrade the Kombolcha-Bati road to asphalt concrete level. The 133 KM road project is estimated to cost the Authority close to 2.8 billion Ethiopian birr.

Construction of the road, which is scheduled to be completed in three years time will be fully financed with a fund secured from the World Bank. The project is part of the fourth Road Sector Development Program (RSDP IV) of the Authority, for which implementation costs are estimated to reach 125.3 billion birr. Out of this, 84.5 billion birr is allocated for federal projects, 14.4 billion birr for regional and 26.4 billion for weredas, the smallest administrative subdivision.

The RSDP is part of the Ethiopian Government's Road Sector Development Program (GTP), tasked to upgrade 728 KM of trunk and link roads and construction of 4,331 KM of new link roads.

Ethiopia Drafting New Building Code

Ethiopia is drafting a new building code to replace the existing one, adopted 18 years ago. The new code is to be modeled after European, U.S. and Singapore building codes.

The Ministry of Urban Development and Construction contracted the Addis Abeba Institute of Technology (AAIT), in January 2012, to draft the code for a fee of 2.6 million Br. A team of 50 professionals, including professors, contractors and architects from across the capital, have been working on the document.

“We expect the whole draft within 45 days,” Yoseph Birru (Dr), head of the Construction Industry Development and Regulatory Bureau of the MoUDC, said.

The draft code takes into consideration earthquake and wind effects, which in turn require new designing codes, the use of more re-bars in construction and bigger structural frameworks in buildings, Yoseph explained.

Bahir Dar University Awarded IT Infrastructure Development Projects

Ethiopia's Bahir Dar University launched a 30 million Br Information Technology infrastructure development on Friday, March 29, 2013, for two of its new campuses.

The projects for each campus were, awarded to Neuro Net PLC and Symbol Technology PLC, respectively, each for 15 million Ethiopian Birr.

Bahir Dar University is already in the process of undertaking a 68 million Ethiopian Birr IT network infrastructure development project, since 2011, for its old campuses. These projects, undertaken by the Information Network Security Agency (INSA), are scheduled for completion in June 2013.

The required softwares for the project was developed by the System Design & Development Case Team, a branch to the Information & Strategic Communications office.

ESLSE to Introduce SMS Notification Service for Importers

The Ethiopian Shipping & Logistics Services Enterprises has installed a new automated notification software that will help to notify customers of the arrival of goods at the dry port, via text message. The software, called CTTS, will automatically send a text message to customers after registering the arrival of the shipments into the ESLSE system.

The Enterprise has been provided with a dedicated server by ethio-telecom, for this particular service. The state owned enterprises are working on a deal for monthly service fees, in order to launch the system within few weeks time.

This is one of a series of actions the Enterprise has taken to provide cargo tracking information, following complaints from customers about the whereabouts of their shipments. Such complaints were especially rampant after problem in the Multi-modal Transport System which caused congestion and delays in the delivery of shipments.

Sebastopol to Build Ethiopia’s Biggest Cinema Complex

Sebastopol Entertainment PLC is planning to build a a two-tower, four-story multiplex in Arada District. Sebastopol has acquired a plot of land from the city administration for the construction of the towers for seven million Birr.

Sebastopol has paid 30pc of the total lease price as a down payment when it acquired the land in February, according to Tewodros Teshome, manager of Sebastopol Entertainment. Sebastopl hired Chartered Structural Consulting Engineers (CSC) PLC for the design of the buildings for 310,000Br. The construction of the tower is estimated to cost 50 million Br and construction will begin in June 2013.

The tower will house multiple cinema screens, entertainment center, children play grounds and food court. The building will also have a film studio that will be able to accommodate different setting equipments film makers may require, Tewodros said.
